Wired Headset Mic Not Working?
Headphones work but the mic doesn’t? It’s usually the plug, the port, or a mute switch. Test it, then check the fixes below.

The plug and the port matter
Look at your headset’s plug:
- One plug with three black rings carries sound and mic. It needs a combined headset jack, which most laptops and phones have (often marked with a headset icon).
- Two plugs (usually green and pink) need separate headphone and mic jacks, common on desktop PCs.
If your single-plug headset goes into a PC with separate pink and green jacks, the mic won’t work — you need a small splitter adapter. The reverse (two plugs into one combo jack) needs a combiner adapter.
1. Check the mute switch
Many headsets have a mute slider on the cable or ear cup, or a flip-up boom that mutes when raised.
2. Push the plug all the way in
A plug that’s half-seated can play sound but not carry the mic. Phone cases sometimes block it too.
3. Select the headset mic
On Windows, Settings → System → Sound → Input; on Mac, System Settings → Sound → Input. Some PCs show a pop-up asking what you plugged in — choose Headset, not Headphones.
4. Try a different jack
On desktops, the rear jacks on the motherboard are often more reliable than front-panel ports.

Why do my headphones work but not the mic?
A single-plug headset in a headphone-only jack, a half-inserted plug, a mute switch, or the wrong input being selected are the usual causes. Check the jack type first.
Do I need a splitter for my headset mic?
If your headset has one plug and your computer has separate pink and green jacks, yes. A headset splitter adapter separates the headphone and microphone signals.
Why does my PC not detect my headset microphone?
Make sure the headset is plugged into a jack that supports a mic, select it under Input in your sound settings, and try the rear jacks on a desktop PC. If a pop-up asks what you plugged in, choose Headset.
