Mic works here but not in Discord?
If the meter above moves when you talk, your microphone and computer are fine — the problem is a setting inside Discord. Work through these in order; most people are fixed by step 1 or 2.
1. Pick the right input device
- Open Discord and click the gear icon (User Settings) next to your name.
- Go to Voice & Video.
- Under Input Device, choose your actual microphone instead of “Default.” Use the same device name you selected in the test above.
- Make sure Input Volume isn’t turned all the way down.
2. Run Discord’s own mic check
On the same Voice & Video page, click Let’s Check and talk. If the bar moves there, Discord can hear you and the problem is likely your input mode or a mute (step 3).
3. Check input mode, sensitivity, and mutes
- Push to Talk: if Input Mode is set to Push to Talk, nobody hears you unless you hold the key. Switch to Voice Activity or set a key you’ll remember.
- Input sensitivity: with Voice Activity, turn on “Automatically determine input sensitivity,” or drag the slider left if you’re quiet.
- Mutes: look for a red slash on the microphone icon next to your name, a server mute icon in the voice channel, or a hardware mute switch on your headset cable.
4. Let Windows or macOS allow the mic
On Windows 11, open Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone and turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone. On macOS, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and switch Discord on, then restart Discord.
5. Still nothing? Reset or switch the audio system
- At the bottom of Voice & Video, click Reset Voice Settings.
- On Windows, try changing Audio Subsystem (under Advanced) to Legacy — it fixes some USB mics and audio interfaces.
- Using Discord in a browser? Click the lock icon in the address bar and allow the microphone for discord.com.
Setting names can shift slightly between Discord updates, but they all live on the Voice & Video settings page.
Discord mic FAQ
Why can my friends not hear me on Discord?
The most common causes are the wrong input device selected in Discord's Voice & Video settings, Push to Talk being turned on, or your microphone being muted in Discord, on the server, or on your headset. If this page's mic test shows movement, your hardware works and the fix is in Discord's settings.
Why does Discord say my mic is working but nobody hears me?
If Discord's Let's Check bar moves but friends hear nothing, check that Input Sensitivity isn't set too high, that you aren't server-muted, and that Push to Talk isn't enabled. Also confirm you're connected to the voice channel, not just viewing it.
How do I make my mic sound better on Discord?
Record a short clip with the Record & Playback tool on this page to hear your raw mic sound. Move the mic closer, lower background noise, and in Discord try adjusting Noise Suppression and Echo Cancellation. If your voice cuts in and out, lower the input sensitivity threshold.
Does this Discord mic test record or upload my voice?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser. The live test never saves audio, and the Record & Playback clip stays in your browser's memory until you refresh or leave, unless you choose to download it.
