Mic works here but not in Google Meet?
Google Meet runs in your browser, so if the test above works in the same browser, your mic and permissions are mostly fine. The fix is usually one of these.
1. Choose the right mic in Meet
- Before joining, on the preview screen, click the arrow or settings icon next to the microphone button. During a call, click the three dots, then Settings → Audio.
- Under Microphone, pick the same device you chose in the test above.
- Say a few words and watch for the level indicator to move.
2. Allow the microphone for meet.google.com
If Meet says your mic is blocked, click the icon on the left of the address bar while on Meet and set Microphone to Allow, then reload. In Chrome you can also check Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Microphone.
3. Let your computer allow the browser
- Windows 11: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone, and turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
- macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone, and switch on your browser. Then quit and reopen the browser.
4. Check you’re not muted
A red microphone button in Meet means you’re muted; click it or press Ctrl + D (Cmd + D on Mac). Also check for a mute switch on your headset cable or a mic-mute key on your laptop.
Sound choppy or robotic rather than silent? Record a clip with the Record & Playback tool above. If it sounds clean here, the problem is likely your internet connection during the call.

Why can't people hear me on Google Meet?
Usually Meet is using the wrong microphone, the browser doesn't have microphone permission for meet.google.com, or you're muted. If the mic test on this page works in the same browser, choose the same device in Meet's audio settings and check the mute button.
How do I test my mic before a Google Meet call?
Use the mic test and Record & Playback tool on this page to confirm your mic works and hear how you sound. On Meet's preview screen before joining, you can also select your microphone and watch its level indicator.
Why does Google Meet say my microphone is blocked?
Your browser has blocked the microphone for meet.google.com. Click the icon on the left of the address bar, set Microphone to Allow, and reload the page. If it's still blocked, check that your operating system allows the browser to use the microphone.
Does this test record or upload my voice?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser. The optional recording stays in your browser's memory and is cleared when you leave or refresh the page, unless you download it.
