How to fix your Chromebook mic or camera
1. Check ChromeOS privacy controls
Open Settings → Privacy and security → Privacy controls and make sure Camera access and Microphone access are on. Recent ChromeOS versions can turn these off for the whole device.
2. Allow this site
Click the icon on the left of the address bar and set Camera and Microphone to Allow, then reload. You can review all sites in Chrome Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings.
3. Choose the right microphone
Click the time in the bottom-right corner, then the arrow next to the volume slider (audio settings), and pick your microphone under Input. Raise its input level there if the meter above barely moves.
4. Check for a privacy switch
Some Chromebooks have a physical camera shutter, or a privacy switch on the side that disables the camera or mic. Look along the edges and above the screen.
5. School or work Chromebook?
Managed Chromebooks can have the camera or mic blocked by your school or employer. If both settings above look right and nothing works, ask your IT administrator.

How do I test my Chromebook microphone?
Click Start Mic Test on this page and allow access. The meter moves when you speak. You can also check the input level in the audio settings from the quick settings panel.
Why is my Chromebook camera not working?
Camera access may be off in ChromeOS privacy controls, the site may be blocked, a privacy shutter may be closed, or your school or workplace may have disabled it. Restarting the Chromebook also helps.
Can a school block the camera on my Chromebook?
Yes. Managed Chromebooks follow policies set by the school or organization, which can disable the camera or microphone. Contact your IT administrator if that's the case.
Does this test record or upload anything?
No. Audio and video stay in your browser and are never uploaded.
