Why Bluetooth mics are tricky

Bluetooth headphones use one mode for high-quality listening and a different hands-free mode when the microphone is on. Computers show these as separate devices, and picking the wrong one is the most common reason the mic seems dead.

1. Select the headset as your input

  • Windows 11: Settings → System → Sound. Under Input, choose the entry for your headset (it may say Headset or Hands-Free).
  • Mac: System Settings → Sound → Input, and pick your headset.

Then choose it in the Microphone dropdown in the test above.

2. Re-pair the headset

  1. Remove the headset from your computer’s Bluetooth settings (Remove device / Forget).
  2. Put the headset in pairing mode (see its manual) and pair it again.

This refreshes the connection and often restores a missing hands-free device.

3. Make sure it isn’t connected elsewhere

Many headsets connect to your phone and computer at once, and the phone may grab the mic. Turn off Bluetooth on the phone while you test.

4. Check permissions and mute

Allow microphone access for your app in your system’s privacy settings, and check the headset for a mute button or voice prompt saying it’s muted.

Music sounds worse when the mic is on? That’s normal: hands-free mode trades audio quality for two-way sound. If quality matters, use a separate mic (even the laptop’s built-in one) and keep the headset for listening.

Why is my Bluetooth headset mic not working on my PC?

Windows may be using a different input, or the headset's hands-free mode isn't selected. In Settings under System and Sound, pick the headset entry under Input. Re-pairing the headset often fixes a missing mic.

Why does my Bluetooth headset sound bad when I use the mic?

When the mic is active, Bluetooth switches to a hands-free mode with lower audio quality so it can send and receive sound at once. This is expected for most Bluetooth headsets.
