How to test your Android mic

  1. Open this page in Chrome on your phone.
  2. Tap Start Mic Test and allow microphone access.
  3. Speak and watch the meter, then use Record & Playback to hear yourself.

Menu names vary a little between phone makers (Samsung, Pixel, Motorola and others), but the steps are similar.

1. Check the Android microphone toggle

Newer Android versions have a system-wide Microphone access switch. Swipe down for Quick Settings and look for a microphone tile, or search your Settings for “Microphone access”. When it’s off, every app gets silence.

2. Allow the mic for Chrome and this site

  • In Chrome, tap the icon on the left of the address bar, then Permissions, and allow Microphone.
  • Also check Settings → Apps → Chrome → Permissions → Microphone.

3. Mic works here but not in an app?

Go to Settings → Apps, pick the app, open Permissions, and allow Microphone.

4. Rule out the hardware

  • Turn Bluetooth off so earbuds or a car don’t take over the mic.
  • Remove the case and check the openings at the bottom edge aren’t blocked.
  • Restart the phone, then test again.
Still silent everywhere? Boot into safe mode (search your phone maker’s instructions) and test again. If the mic works there, a recently installed app is interfering.

Why is my Android microphone not working?

The system-wide Microphone access toggle may be off, the app may not have microphone permission, or a Bluetooth device may be acting as the mic. Blocked openings and cases can also muffle it.

How do I allow microphone access in Chrome on Android?

Tap the icon on the left of the address bar, open Permissions, and allow Microphone. Also make sure Chrome has microphone permission in your phone's app settings.

Does this test record or upload my voice?

No. Everything stays in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
